Minoxidil for Eyebrows: Does It Work & Comparison

Performed at authorized partner hospitals Turkey Hair Center is a Ministry of Health authorized health-tourism intermediary, not a clinic.

Minoxidil for eyebrows means applying a scalp hair loss medicine to thin brows in the hope of thicker, darker hairs. It is a popular idea online, and a few small trials suggest it can help weak brow hairs that are still growing.

One fact comes first: using minoxidil on the eyebrows is off-label. Over-the-counter minoxidil is approved for hereditary hair loss on the scalp, and its own Drug Facts label says not to apply it on other parts of the body and to avoid contact with the eyes. This guide explains what the studies found, the risks, how it compares with Latisse (bimatoprost), and when an eyebrow transplant is the more realistic option. It does not give a dose, because there is no approved one for brows.

The photo shows a close-up of an adult eyebrow with short, fine hairs. Minoxidil can only act on follicles that still grow hairs like these, which is why the trials below enrolled people with sparse brows rather than bare skin.

What Minoxidil Is Best for Eyebrows?

There is no minoxidil product made or approved for eyebrows. Every product on sale is designed for the scalp, so the honest answer to "which one is best" is that none has been tested and labelled for this use.

Three cards compare minoxidil used off-label, bimatoprost studied for brows, and an eyebrow transplant for bare areas

What we do have is a handful of trials that used low-strength preparations on the brows:

  • 2% lotion: a split-face trial in 40 adults compared it with a placebo lotion for 16 weeks.
  • 2% gel: a 2023 randomized trial in 60 adults compared it with two strengths of bimatoprost gel for 16 weeks.
  • 3% solution: an earlier randomized trial compared it with bimatoprost, as described in the 2023 trial's discussion.

None of these trials tested the 5% foam or 5% liquid that most people buy for the scalp. So questions such as minoxidil foam vs liquid for eyebrows, or 2% vs 5%, have no direct answer from brow studies. A doctor who agrees to off-label use will choose the product and how to use it based on your skin and your eyes.

Topical vs Oral Minoxidil for Eyebrows

Low-dose oral minoxidil is a prescription medicine. It has been reported to help eyebrows in people with frontal fibrosing alopecia, a scarring condition, in small case series. It acts on the whole body, so it is only considered by a doctor who has examined you, and it is not a cosmetic brow product.

Does Rogaine Work on Eyebrows?

Rogaine is a brand of minoxidil, so the evidence is the same. In short: small trials show a modest benefit for thin brows, the evidence base is limited, and the effect lasts only while you keep using it.

What the Research Shows

The clearest test was a split-face study. Each of 40 adults applied 2% minoxidil lotion to one eyebrow and a placebo lotion to the other. After 16 weeks, the minoxidil side did better on every measure, including photo assessment, hair count, hair diameter and patient satisfaction, and 39 of the 40 people completed the study.

In the 2023 trial, all three groups improved after 16 weeks. At least one grade of improvement on an eyebrow scale was seen in 80% of the minoxidil 2% group, 80% of the bimatoprost 0.01% group and every patient in the bimatoprost 0.03% group. The difference between the groups was not statistically significant.

A 2025 systematic review of 19 trials on minoxidil for facial hair concluded that low-strength minoxidil is effective for facial hair growth, with mostly minor side effects. The same review noted that most of the studies raised some concern about risk of bias.

Is Minoxidil on Eyebrows Off-Label?

Yes. No minoxidil eyebrows product has been approved, so any use on the brows is off-label. The 5% men's foam label lists these directions and warnings:

  • It is for hereditary hair loss on the top of the scalp.
  • Do not apply on other parts of the body.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, and rinse with cool water if it happens.
  • Stop and ask a doctor if unwanted facial hair growth or scalp irritation occurs.

Off-label does not mean forbidden. It means the safety and dosing on the box were not designed for brows, so the decision belongs with a doctor.

Who Is Unlikely to Benefit

Minoxidil can only work on follicles that still grow some hair. It is unlikely to help when:

  • The brow skin has been smooth and bare for years.
  • The loss comes from scarring, such as frontal fibrosing alopecia that has already scarred.
  • The cause is a medical condition that has not been treated, such as thyroid disease.
  • Hairs keep being pulled out, for example by habit, so new growth never settles.

The brow trials above excluded people with alopecia areata, trichotillomania and thyroid disease. Their results describe otherwise healthy adults with naturally sparse brows, not every cause of brow loss.

Minoxidil for Eyebrows Side Effects

In the brow trials, side effects were minor. The 2023 trial reported negligible adverse events and a single case of contact dermatitis. Even so, the eye area is sensitive, and the scalp label lists problems that matter here: irritation, eye contact and unwanted facial hair where the product spreads. People with heart disease are told on the label to ask a doctor before using minoxidil at all.

How to Use Minoxidil Safely on Eyebrows

This section is about safety, not dosing. We do not give an amount or schedule for brows, because none has been approved and the products are not made for the face.

  • Find the cause first. Thin brows can come from ageing, overplucking, alopecia areata, scarring conditions or an underactive thyroid. A dermatologist can tell these apart.
  • Ask a doctor about off-label use. If they agree, follow their product choice and instructions exactly.
  • Protect the eyes. The label warns against eye contact. Wash your hands after any application.
  • Watch the skin around the brow. Redness, itching or unwanted hair on the forehead or cheeks are reasons to stop and call your doctor.
  • Track progress with photos. Take dated photos in the same light every month.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are a separate case: the scalp label says the product may be harmful then, so do not use it on the brows without medical advice.

Can Minoxidil Transform Your Brows?

It can make weak hairs a little thicker, longer or darker in some people, which can be enough for brows that are only slightly sparse. It does not create new follicles. A brow with gaps of bare skin, a missing tail or a scar will still have those gaps after treatment.

How Long to Use Minoxidil for Eyebrows?

The brow trials ran for 16 weeks, and that is roughly the window in which they measured a difference. The scalp label says some men need at least 4 months to see results, and that continued use is needed to keep any regrowth.

A practical way to read this:

  • First weeks: little or no visible change is normal.
  • Around 4 months: the trials measured their results at this point.
  • After stopping: the label for scalp use says hair loss begins again, and there is no reason to expect brows to behave differently.

If you see no change after about 4 months, the label advises asking a doctor. For brows, that is also the time to talk about other options.

Latisse vs Minoxidil for Eyebrows

Latisse is bimatoprost 0.03%, a prostaglandin eye solution. Its FDA approval covers hypotrichosis of the eyelashes, not the brows, so bimatoprost on eyebrows is also off-label. The two are often compared because both have been tested on brows.

A 3 ml dropper bottle of Lumigan (bimatoprost 0.3 mg/ml) eye drops, a glaucoma medicine. Photo: Maximiliaan Ronaldszoon, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons, cropped.

The bottle shown is Lumigan, bimatoprost 0.3 mg/ml eye drops prescribed for glaucoma; 0.3 mg/ml is the same 0.03% strength as Latisse. Using bimatoprost on the brows is off-label in either form, so it is a decision to make with a doctor.

In a larger multicentre trial, adults with thin brows used bimatoprost 0.03% or a vehicle for 7 months, and significantly more people improved with bimatoprost. Its label warns that it can darken the iris, and that this change is likely to be permanent. That is one reason it is only used under medical supervision.

Minoxidil vs Castor Oil for Eyebrows

Castor oil is a common home remedy for brows. A 2026 dermatology review found support for castor oil improving the shine of hair, while any effect on hair growth was described as possible and in need of further clinical study. Our search of the medical literature found no controlled trial of castor oil on eyebrows to set against the minoxidil studies above. The same review lists rare reactions such as contact dermatitis.

When an Eyebrow Transplant Makes More Sense

Medicines can only strengthen hairs that are still there. When the brow has bare skin, a missing outer third or a shape you want to rebuild, an eyebrow transplant moves single hairs from the back of the scalp to the brow. Our eyebrow transplant page explains the method, the usual graft range and the recovery week by week.

Transplanted brow hairs keep the nature of scalp hair, so they grow long and are trimmed regularly. A transplant also does not suit active or scarring brow conditions. A clinical review describes a group of ten people with frontal fibrosing alopecia in whom the transplanted brow hairs were lost after 3 to 4 years in all but one. A dermatologist should confirm the cause of the loss first.

Turkey Hair Center is a Ministry of Health authorized health-tourism intermediary; procedures take place at authorized partner hospitals using the FUE technique. Scalp hair transplant packages range from $2,550 to $4,500, and the hair transplant cost page explains what they include.

Frequently Asked Questions

Brows change with age, as in this photo, where some hairs have turned grey and grow long and wiry. Ageing is the first cause on the list above, and finding the cause comes before choosing any product.

Can You Use Minoxidil on Eyebrows?
You can only do so off-label. Minoxidil is approved for hereditary hair loss on the scalp, and its label says not to apply it elsewhere on the body and to keep it away from the eyes. Small trials suggest a modest benefit for thin brows, so talk to a doctor before trying it.
Does Minoxidil Help Eyebrows Grow?
In small trials it improved hair count, thickness and appearance in sparse brows over 16 weeks compared with placebo. It helps only where follicles still produce hair, and the effect depends on continued use.
Is Minoxidil for Eyebrows Safe?
In the brow trials, side effects were minor; one trial of 60 people reported a single case of contact dermatitis. The real risks are eye contact, irritation of the thin skin around the brow and unwanted facial hair if the product spreads. Because the use is off-label, a doctor should decide whether it suits you.
Can Minoxidil Be Used for Eyebrows and Eyelashes?
Not for eyelashes. The label says to avoid contact with the eyes, and the eyelid margin sits right next to them. Bimatoprost (Latisse) is the product approved for thin eyelashes, and it needs a prescription.
Does Minoxidil for Eyebrows Work for Women and Men?
The 2023 brow trial included both women and men, and results were reported for each treatment group as a whole rather than by sex. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use minoxidil without medical advice, as the label says it may be harmful then.
What Happens If You Stop Using Minoxidil on Your Eyebrows?
Any gain is expected to fade. The scalp label states that continued use is needed to keep regrowth and that hair loss begins again when you stop.
Can Minoxidil Grow Eyebrows Where There Is No Hair?
Usually not. It strengthens existing hairs and cannot create follicles where they have been lost. Bare areas are where an eyebrow transplant is considered.
Why Are My Eyebrows Thinning?
A clinical review lists causes that include ageing, repeated pulling or overplucking, alopecia areata, frontal fibrosing alopecia and infections. Loss of the outer third of the brow is a classic but nonspecific sign of an underactive thyroid. Our guide to reasons for hair loss covers the wider picture, and a doctor can check your thyroid.
How Long Does Minoxidil Take to Work on Eyebrows?
Expect to wait around four months. The placebo-controlled brow trials measured their results after 16 weeks of use, and the scalp label says some men need at least 4 months before they see results. If there is no change after that, the label advises asking a doctor, which is also the point to discuss other options for the brows.
Can You Use 5% Minoxidil on Eyebrows?
There is no brow trial of the 5% strength. The placebo-controlled studies used a 2% lotion or a 2% gel, and an earlier trial used a 3% solution. The 5% foam and liquid are made for the scalp, and their label says not to apply them to other parts of the body. Any decision about strength belongs with a doctor who agrees to off-label use.
Can Minoxidil on Eyebrows Cause Unwanted Facial Hair?
It can. The 5% foam label tells users to stop and ask a doctor if unwanted facial hair growth occurs. On the brows, the product sits close to the forehead, temples and eyelids, so it can spread to skin where extra hair is not wanted. If you notice new hair on nearby skin, stop and talk to the doctor who suggested the treatment.
Is Microblading an Alternative to Minoxidil for Thin Eyebrows?
Microblading does not grow hair. It deposits pigment in the skin to make brows look fuller, and a clinical review notes that the effect lasts 12 to 18 months before it needs repeating as the pigment fades. Minoxidil acts on hairs that are still growing. Neither replaces follicles that have been lost, which is where an eyebrow transplant is considered.

Thin Brows: Next Step

If your brows are only slightly sparse, a doctor can tell you whether a medicine is worth trying. If there are bare gaps or the shape has gone, send clear front and side photos of your brows for a free hair analysis, and the medical team will tell you whether an eyebrow transplant fits and how many grafts it would need.
