Adderall can be linked to hair loss, but it is not a common side effect. The Adderall labels list alopecia only as a reported reaction with no frequency, while appetite loss, weight loss and insomnia, which can all trigger shedding, are among the most frequent effects measured in the trials.

So the answer to "does Adderall cause hair loss" is a qualified yes: directly in rare reported cases, and indirectly through eating less, sleeping less and losing weight. This guide explains the evidence on Adderall and hair loss, what is known about hair loss from Adderall in women, whether stopping it changes anything and what to do if your hair is thinning.
The photo shows a month's supply of Adderall XR 10 mg capsules. XR is the extended-release form, and each capsule holds small beads of mixed amphetamine salts. How these capsules relate to shedding is set out below, and the dose is always a decision for your prescriber.
What Is Adderall?
Adderall is a prescription central nervous system stimulant made of mixed amphetamine salts: dextroamphetamine and amphetamine. It is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and the immediate-release form is also approved for narcolepsy. Adderall XR is the extended-release capsule; generic versions contain the same active ingredients.

Unlike the XR capsules at the top of this page, this is a scored immediate-release tablet. Both forms contain the same mixed amphetamine salts, so the label information on appetite, sleep and hair applies to each.
In the US it is a Schedule II controlled substance. The label carries a boxed warning: Adderall XR has a high potential for abuse and misuse, which can lead to a substance use disorder, including addiction. Misuse of stimulants can result in overdose and death.
Like other stimulants, Adderall raises alertness and focus, and it commonly reduces appetite. Those everyday effects are the main reason it comes up in conversations about hair, because the body needs steady nutrition and sleep to keep hair in its growth phase.
Does Adderall Lead to Hair Loss?
The Adderall XR label lists "Skin: Alopecia" in section 6.2, among adverse reactions reported after the drug came to market. The immediate-release Adderall label also lists alopecia among its skin reactions, without a frequency. These reports are voluntary, so the label does not give a rate, and a report does not prove the drug caused the loss.
Research specific to amphetamines and hair is thin. A 2021 case-control study in the Ochsner Journal looked at children seen in dermatology clinics and found no relationship between ADHD stimulant use and most types of hair loss. It did find an association with alopecia universalis, but only 3 children in the study had that diagnosis, so the authors called for further study.
High Dosage or Adderall Abuse
Misuse changes the picture. The label warns that the risk of overdose and death rises with higher doses or with unapproved routes such as snorting or injection. Heavy use also tends to deepen appetite loss, weight loss and sleep loss, the same factors linked to shedding.
Other Adderall Side Effects
The controlled trials give real numbers for the side effects most relevant to hair. In the adult Adderall XR trial (191 people on the drug, 64 on placebo), these were among the most common reactions:
Loss of appetite: 33% on Adderall XR vs 3% on placebo.
Insomnia: 27% vs 13%.
Weight loss: 10% vs 0%.
In adolescents, loss of appetite was reported by 36% vs 2% on placebo, and weight loss by 9% vs 0%. The label also lists dermatillomania (compulsive skin picking), Raynaud's phenomenon and other circulation changes in the fingers and toes, raised blood pressure and heart rate, and psychiatric effects.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for Adderall-Related Hair Loss
No study has tested platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for hair loss linked to Adderall or to telogen effluvium. The evidence for PRP comes from androgenetic alopecia: a 2023 meta-analysis of 9 randomised trials with 238 patients found higher hair density at 3 and 6 months than placebo. Hair count and diameter were not significantly different from placebo.
Can Stopping Adderall Cause Hair Loss?
Stopping Adderall is not listed as a cause of hair loss, but the timing of shedding can make it look that way. Telogen effluvium, the diffuse shed linked to medicines, illness and weight loss, usually appears about two to three months after the trigger. If you lost weight or slept poorly in the months before stopping, the shed can arrive after the medicine is gone.
The label describes what can happen after abrupt discontinuation or a significant dose reduction following prolonged use: dysphoric mood, depression, fatigue, vivid unpleasant dreams, insomnia or too much sleep, increased appetite and slowed or agitated movement. None of these is hair loss, but stress and poor sleep during that period may add to shedding.

These tablets are dispensed in a labelled prescription vial, and that label is the plan to follow. If you notice shedding, bring it to the prescriber who wrote it rather than changing or skipping doses yourself.
The practical point is the same as with any prescription. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says it is essential not to stop taking a medicine before talking with your doctor, because stopping some medicines abruptly can cause serious health problems. A planned change with your prescriber is safer than stopping on your own because of hair.
Do not stop or cut down Adderall on your own because of hair shedding. The label lists withdrawal symptoms after abrupt discontinuation, and the AAD advises talking with your doctor before stopping any medicine. Bring dated photos and a note of your weight and sleep to the appointment.
Does Adderall Make You Lose Hair?
For most people, no. Alopecia is listed only as a postmarketing report, while the trial data show that the large majority of adults on Adderall XR did not lose weight. People often ask "does Adderall make you lose your hair" or "can Adderall make your hair fall out" after noticing more hair in the brush a few months into treatment.
When that happens, the likely chain is indirect: less food and less sleep lead to a shed two to three months later. The AAD lists weight loss of 20 lb or more and stress among the triggers of excessive shedding. So does Adderall make your hair fall out? Rarely by itself, more often through the habits it changes.
Does Adderall Cause Hair Loss in Women?
There is no published data showing that women are at higher risk. The label does not report hair loss by sex, and the 2021 case-control study matched cases and controls by sex rather than comparing them. Women do face more causes of diffuse shedding overall, including childbirth, stopping the pill and iron deficiency, so these should be checked before Adderall is blamed. Female pattern hair loss, which widens the parting, is another common cause that a stimulant would not explain.
Adderall Hair Thinning
Adderall hair thinning usually looks like diffuse loss: the ponytail feels thinner, more hairs collect in the drain, and the scalp shows more through the hair on top. That pattern fits telogen effluvium. Pattern hair loss looks different, with thinning at the temples and crown in men or along the parting in women, and it develops gradually over years.
The AAD says it is normal to shed 50 to 100 hairs a day. During telogen effluvium, more follicles than usual enter the resting phase at once, and their hairs fall out together. A 2020 review of telogen effluvium in Cureus describes acute shedding as lasting less than six months.
A doctor can separate the possible causes with a few steps:
Timeline: what changed two to three months before the shed (new medicine, dose change, weight loss, illness).
Pull test and scalp exam: to see how many hairs come out and whether the scalp looks inflamed.
Blood tests: commonly iron stores and thyroid function, which can cause the same pattern.
Pattern check: whether thinning follows a male or female pattern rather than spreading evenly.
If blood tests show a deficiency, the guide to vitamins for hair loss explains which nutrients are linked to shedding. For the wider list of triggers, see our reasons for hair loss guide. For male pattern thinning, the Norwood scale helps describe the stage clearly.
Adderall Ruined My Hair
"Adderall ruined my hair" is a common phrase in forums, and the distress behind it is real. The evidence suggests most of these stories describe a temporary shed, often after months of eating and sleeping less, rather than permanent damage. Telogen effluvium leaves the follicles intact, so hair can grow back once the cause settles. If thinning continues past six months, ask a dermatologist to check for pattern hair loss or another condition.
Causes of Hair Thinning While Taking Adderall
Several factors can combine while you take a stimulant. The table below sets out what the label and research show for each.
Factor
What the evidence shows
Source type
Direct drug effect
Alopecia listed as a postmarketing report, no frequency
FDA label
Appetite and weight
Loss of appetite 33% vs 3%; weight loss 10% vs 0% in adults
Eating less over weeks can mean less protein, iron and calories. The AAD lists significant weight loss among the triggers of excessive shedding. A blood test is the way to confirm a deficiency before taking supplements.
Stress and Cortisol Elevation
A 2021 study in Nature found that in mice, chronic stress raised the stress hormone corticosterone (the rodent version of cortisol), which kept hair follicles in an extended resting phase. No study has measured whether Adderall changes cortisol enough to affect human hair, so this remains a possible link rather than a proven one.
Sleep Disruption and Scalp Behaviors
Insomnia was twice as common on Adderall XR as on placebo in adults. The label also lists dermatillomania, and picking or rubbing at the scalp can damage hair locally. Pulling out hair is a separate condition, trichotillomania, which a doctor can assess.
Consult a Healthcare Professional
Bring the timeline, photos and any blood test results to your prescriber. They can decide whether to continue, adjust or change treatment, and a dermatologist can confirm the type of hair loss.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Adderall XR Cause Hair Loss?
The Adderall XR label lists alopecia among postmarketing reports, without a frequency. In the adult trial, more common effects were loss of appetite (33% vs 3% on placebo), insomnia and weight loss, which can trigger a temporary shed two to three months later.
Does Adderall Affect Hair Loss?
It can, mostly indirectly. Reduced appetite, weight loss and poor sleep are well documented with Adderall and are recognised triggers of telogen effluvium. Direct hair loss from the drug is listed only as a rare postmarketing report, so other causes should be checked too.
Does Adderall Cause Permanent Hair Loss?
There is no evidence that Adderall causes permanent hair loss in typical use. Shedding linked to medicines and weight loss is usually telogen effluvium, which leaves follicles intact. Permanent thinning is more likely to come from pattern hair loss that happens at the same time.
Does Adderall Cause Hair to Fall Out?
In a minority of people, hair may fall out more than usual, usually as a diffuse shed a few months into treatment. Normal daily shedding is 50 to 100 hairs according to the AAD. If you lose clearly more than that for weeks, see your doctor rather than stopping the medicine.
Does Generic Adderall Cause Hair Loss?
Generic Adderall contains the same active ingredients, mixed amphetamine salts, so the same label information applies. There is no evidence that generic versions carry a different hair loss risk from the brand. Any switch between products should go through your prescriber.
How Long After Stopping Adderall Does Hair Grow Back?
Regrowth follows the trigger rather than a fixed date after the last dose. The AAD says that once the cause passes, hair tends to regain its normal fullness within six to nine months, and a 2020 Cureus review describes acute telogen effluvium as lasting less than six months. Any change to treatment should be agreed with your prescriber first.
Can Switching to Another ADHD Medication Stop the Hair Loss?
We found no study comparing hair loss between ADHD medicines, so there is no evidence that switching stops it. The label of Concerta, a methylphenidate product, also lists alopecia among postmarketing reports without a frequency. Whether to switch is a decision for your prescriber; bring dated photos and your weight history so they can weigh the options.
Can Adderall Cause Hair Loss in Children?
The label gives no hair loss rate for children. In the Adderall XR trial in children aged 6 to 12, loss of appetite affected 22% versus 2% on placebo, and insomnia 17% versus 2%. The label tells doctors to monitor height and weight closely. The 2021 Ochsner study in children found no link with most types of hair loss.
